Education and Residency
UPMC Community Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg, PA
Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni
George Mason University in Fairfax, VA
Why did you choose this residency program?
To focus on outpatient medicine, osteopathic recognition with emphasis on OPP and OMT, heavy in outpatient procedures, exposure to various in-house fellowships like sports medicine and addiction medicine, small community atmosphere and family feel.
Why did you choose family medicine?
I chose family medicine for many of the same reasons as above! I loved the variety of what you see in an FM clinic and all the aspects of your medical education that you get to apply to your day-to-day. I also love the impact you make on an entire community and how you can become a meaningful part of so many peoples' lives.
What is a typical day like in your life as a resident?
A typical day consists of a 5:45 am wake up and get ready, 6:45am out the door, 7:30am start with morning education at the hospital such as morning report, interesting case presentation, specialty lecture, etc., 9am rotation start time - highly dependent on what rotation you're on, 5pm the day is over!
What do you like to do in your time outside of residency?
I have a wife and three kids so I spend as much of my free time as possible with them, we go to HersheyPark (season pass holders!), go on the various trails and parks of the York County Parks system, ski at Roundtop in the winter, and my wife and I go to wineries, cideries and all kinds of outdoor fun when we can!
Why did you volunteer to join the Resident Council?
I joined to make an impact within the Family Medicine community and to specifically help to recruit FM residents to maintain their osteopathic distinction and continue to incorporate OMT into their regular residency lives.
Were you involved with ACOFP as a Student?
Yes! I was a student-member from day one.
What is your one word of advice to students?
Every single year of medical education and then residency is significantly easier than the year before. Just keep chugging!
If you could meet one famous dead person, who would it be?
Patrick Henry - founding father and orator who helped lead the states to revolt against England.
If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?
Teddy Roosevelt - he wore many hats and had many careers, also experienced tragedies, and failures in addition to success and honors. He would have so much to teach!
What would you title an autobiography or memoir?
"An Unlikely Doctor: Raffi's Journey from Failure to Physician"
