Why did you choose this residency program?

I chose the program at UPMC Lititz due to its intimate and close-knit community, which I believe offers unique advantages for residents. The program's smaller size fosters an environment where hands-on experience and autonomy are not just encouraged, but actively promoted. This environment enables residents to immerse ourselves more deeply in patient care and develop a strong sense of responsibility, both of which are essential for honing our medical skills.  The smaller program size allows for closer collaboration with both fellow residents and attending physicians. This collaboration facilitates a dynamic and supportive learning environment, where knowledge and experience are readily shared. Building meaningful connections with my colleagues and mentors is something I value greatly.

Why did you choose family medicine?

I pursued a career in family medicine due to a profound appreciation for the inherent qualities of continuity of care, the wide spectrum of pathologies encountered, and the limitless opportunities the field offers. I wanted comprehensive training that would allow me to provide care across the entire age spectrum and treat a wide variety of medical conditions.

What is a typical day like in your life as a resident?

My daily routine is quite dynamic and can vary from day to day depending on the rotation. Typically, I start the day with morning report meetings, which are led by faculty and residents. I usually spend 1.5 days per week in our outpatient clinic, providing care to patients spanning all age groups, from infants to the elderly. Many of our patients face significant barriers to healthcare access, resulting in a challenging and diverse patient panel with complex medical conditions. On the remaining days of the week, I rotate across various specialties, both in inpatient and outpatient settings. Thursday afternoons are dedicated for family medicine didactic sessions led by faculty and residents. These sessions cover a wide range of topics and include lectures, board review, and hands-on procedure workshops. What makes each day truly fulfilling is the opportunity to work closely with and learn from my co-residents.

What do you like to do in your time outside of residency?

I enjoy gatherings with family, traveling with my wife, and trying out new foods!

Why did you volunteer to join the Resident Council?

I wanted to serve as a bridge for osteopathic residents and physicians at all stages of their medical education journey. My objective was to advocate for the voices of residents on a national level. ACOFP offers a myriad of valuable resources for osteopathic residents and physicians, including journals, conferences, and OMT-focused continuing education. I wanted to collaborate with my peers and illuminate ACOFP's existing resources for family medicine residents while contributing to the development of more resources tailored to residents’ needs.

What is your one word of advice to students?

Lifelong Learning: Learning is a lifelong journey. It doesn't stop when you graduate medical school, complete your residency training, or start working as an attending physician. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning will help you adapt to an ever-changing world in medicine and beyond.

When was the first time you realized you wanted to be a physician?

From high school onward, my fascination with basic science courses, particularly anatomy and physiology, has been unwavering. The complexity of the human body has perpetually intrigued me, and becoming a physician would pave the perfect route to delve deeper into comprehending these remarkable intricacies, all while serving and contributing positively to underserved communities.
