Where do you currently practice, and what population do you serve?
TJ Regional Health in Glasgow, KY, serving a rural farm community.
Why did you choose family medicine?
The long and short is that I wanted to see a wide variety of patients and still have the family life I wanted. I have been in medicine for roughly 20 years in various roles. I was tired of missing family dinners, play dates, birthday parties, etc. I come home every night for dinner with my family.
What is a typical day like in your life as a new physician-in-practice?
I work outpatient clinic. My first patient is at 0800. I see roughly 15-18 patients per day. My last patient is at 1630. I have a four-day work week. About a quarter of my patients want OMT, which I perform during their visit. I see every type of patient except pregnant ones. I can go from doing a newborn check to seeing a geriatric for chronic care follow-up to seeing an acute sick visit.
Are you currently involved in national ACOFP on a committee or volunteer role?
I am involved with the New Physician-in-Practice and Federal Legislation committees. I am also a peer reviewer for OFP.
What have you volunteered for, on a state or national level, and how did it impact you?
I volunteered to serve in the US Army for over 8 years. It has shown me that life is what you make of it and that nothing worth having is just given—YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR IT.
What is your one word of advice to residents?
Investigate. Find out why every attending practices the way he/she does. Why did they choose that medication and not another? What are the guidelines for X disease and when should you individualize that guideline? Look for new ways of doing things.
