Where do you currently practice? What is the setting and the population you serve?
Prevea Health and HSHS (Wisconsin). Currently practicing in a setting of half time community clinic in a suburban region and half time as residency faculty in clinic and hospital.
Why did you choose family medicine?
For the variety it allows in patients and pathologies, but also career pathways and goals.
What is a typical day like in your life as a new physician in practice?
2.5 days a week I am in my own clinic seeing my own personal patients from newborn to geriatrics and practicing to my fullest ability doing procedures, Medicare wellness, and counseling on healthy living. 1.5 days of the week I work with residents precepting and training the next generation of family physicians. 9 weeks out of the year I do a full week in the hospital rounding on patients and managing the inpatient family medicine residency team.
What is your one word of advice to residents?
Resilience. No matter the trial and tribulation, if you are resilient, there is something amazing at the end waiting.
When was the first time you realized you wanted to be a physician?
I was always told I would be a physician growing up by my dad, but the first time I realized I wanted to be a physician for myself was when I was completing my art degree in college realizing that the other hobbies I pursued during college, including sports, art, and extracurriculars, were nothing compared to the joy I had volunteering, working in and around the hospital, with patients, and along other medical personnel. At that time, it was clear that medicine was not only going to be the end goal, but the ultimate happy ending, and so far it has been as fulfilling as I could have ever imagined through all the ups and downs of the journey itself. I have made many amazing friends and been a part of so many beautiful medical stories.
