The ACOFP Board of Governors

What Does the Board of Governors Do?

  • Manages ACOFP strategic priorities at a high level.
  • Carries out the policies and directives passed by the Congress of Delegates.
  • Made up of leaders in the osteopathic family medicine profession, including student and resident representatives.

Regular board members are appointed for 3-year terms.

Applications for upcoming terms will be accepted now through August 15, 2024.

Board Fiduciary Responsibilities

ACOFP Board members have a fiduciary responsibility to the organization as required by law. These responsibilities are:

Duty of Loyalty

Board members must put the interests of ACOFP above other personal or financial interests and comply with policies regarding the code of conduct and ethical behavior.

Duty of Care

Board members must act prudently and diligently to protect and enhance the assets of ACOFP and further its mission.

Duty of Obedience

Board members must obey the law and act in accordance with ACOFP‘s bylaws and be faithful to the organization’s mission.

Application Checklist

  • Two letters of support that demonstrate that the nominee has provided leadership at the state or national level. These letters can be provided by an ACOFP State Society, the Chair of an ACOFP committee, work group or task force on which the nominee has served; or from the Department of Family Medicine from a COM or hospital in which the nominee is employed.
  • Answer the following 2 interview questions (500 words or less for each essay)
    • Essay 1: Tell us about yourself and why you are applying. How will you commit the needed time to be an active and engaged leader?
    • Essay 2: Detail how you will support ACOFP’s mission and vision should you be elected to the position for which you are applying?
  • Answer 2 of the following interview questions (in a Video Recorded Response)
    • Explain how you encountered a problem either professionally or personally and how you proceeded to correct that problem?
    • How do you define accountability?
    • What makes the ACOFP’s mission meaningful to you?
    • What do you think makes for a good Governor for the ACOFP?
    • Share an experience you have had learning or working toward improving DEI efforts in your workplace or community.

Expectations

  • Is an ACOFP member in good standing.
  • Publicly support and promote ACOFP’s Constitution, Bylaws, and policies.
  • Be a supporter and positive advocate for ACOFP.
  • Be competent in your actions and decisions for ACOFP.
  • Engage in regular dialogue with fellow ACOFP Board members.
  • Conduct yourself with the highest level of integrity. 
  • Adhere to ACOFP conflict of interest policy and the Board of Governors Code of Responsibility.
  • Respond to phone calls/emails, serve on committees, and be prepared for and attend these Board meetings (at ACOFP's expense):
    • A one-day meeting in February (virtual)
    • A six-day meeting during the April ACOFP Annual Convention & Scientific Seminars
    • A three-day summer meeting in June
    • A three-day meeting during the fall AOA/ACOFP OMED Convention

Evaluation Criteria

The Leadership Development Committee will give preference to candidates who:

  • Are a Distinguished Fellow or Fellow of the ACOFP
  • Are certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP)
  • Possess experience as a national committee chair or committee member during which time the nominee demonstrated leadership, integrity, and the ability to lead a project or program
  • Demonstrates Osteopathic Commitment
  • Exhibits strong communication/interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates relevant strategic and problem-solving skills
  • Has a commitment to DEI and experience with DEI initiatives
  • Is not currently serving on the AOA or AAFP Board

  • Two letters of support from either your family medicine program director or the department of family medicine at a college of osteopathic medicine or another faculty member/physician that has knowledge of your leadership capability.
  • Answer the following 2 interview questions (500 words or less for each essay)
    • Essay 1: Tell us about yourself and why you are applying. How will you commit the needed time to be an active and engaged leader?
    • Essay 2: Detail how you will support ACOFP’s mission and vision should you be elected to the position for which you are applying?
  • Answer 2 of the following interview questions (in a Video Recorded Response)
    • Explain how you encountered a problem either professionally or personally and how you proceeded to correct that problem?
    • How do you define accountability?
    • What makes the ACOFP’s mission meaningful to you?
    • What do you think makes for a good Governor for the ACOFP?

Expectations

  • Is an ACOFP member in good standing.
  • Serve as the communication link between the osteopathic family medicine residents and ACOFP leadership. To accomplish this, the Resident Governor will need to interact with both residents and ACOFP leadership, representing the position of each population to the other with the vitality of the entire association as the primary outcome.
  • Help ACOFP achieve its strategic goals, with particular emphasis on the goals related to increasing the number of osteopathic students selecting osteopathic family practice residency programs and the goal of increasing the retention of residents as ACOFP members upon their residency completion.
  • Publicly support and promote ACOFP’s Constitution, Bylaws, and policies.
  • Be a supporter and positive advocate for ACOFP.
  • Be competent in your actions and decisions for ACOFP.
  • Engage in regular dialogue with fellow ACOFP Board members.
  • Articulate a vision for the enhancement of student services and benefits and interacts with the active members of ACOFP.
  • Serve as Board liaison to the Resident Council.
  • Conduct yourself with the highest level of integrity. 
  • Adhere to ACOFP conflict of interest policy and the Board of Governors Code of Responsibility.
  • Respond to phone calls/emails, serve on committees, and be prepared for and attend these Board meetings (at ACOFP's expense):
    • A one-day meeting in February (virtual)
    • A six-day meeting during the April ACOFP Annual Convention & Scientific Seminars
    • A three-day summer meeting in June
    • A three-day meeting during the fall AOA/ACOFP OMED Convention

Evaluation Criteria

  • Is a second-year resident in good standing at an ACGME-approved family medicine residency at the time of consideration by the Leadership Development Committee
  • Has been an ACOFP resident member for at least one year
  • Has demonstrated leadership, personal integrity, and experience in leading professional, philanthropic and/or public service projects
  • Demonstrates Osteopathic Commitment
  • Exhibits strong communication/interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates relevant strategic and problem-solving skills
  • Has a commitment to DEI and experience with DEI initiatives
  • Has preferably not served as the ACOFP Student Governor
  • Is not currently serving on the AOA or AAFP Board

      Evaluation Criteria

      The Leadership Development Committee will give preference to candidates who:

      • Is a second or third-year student in good academic standing at a college of osteopathic medicine at the time of consideration by the Leadership Development Committee
      • Has been a member of their student chapter of the ACOFP for at least one full academic year
      • Demonstrates experience in the Student Association of the ACOFP as a student chapter officer or National Student Executive Board officer
      • Has demonstrated leadership, personal integrity, and experience in leading professional, philanthropic and/or public service projects
      • Demonstrates Osteopathic Commitment
      • Exhibits strong communication/interpersonal skills
      • Demonstrates relevant strategic and problem-solving skills
      • Has a commitment to DEI and experience with DEI initiatives
      • Commits to select ACGME-accredited family medicine residency
      • Is not currently serving on the AOA or AAFP Board
